Free tax help for low income residents

IRS funds services for the poor elderly, impoverished families and indigent.


In 1998 Congress wanted a kinder and gentler IRS. Among the changes in the Reform Act passed at that time was an ambitious mission to fund low income tax clinics. The IRS just announced grants to four such clinics in MA. ProBono services to resolve tax disputes are provided by attorneys, enrolled agents, and in some cases students.

The IRS seeks to provide taxpayers with top-quality services. Businesses hire employees and consultants to address their tax issues. The middle and working class can hire a tax representative, such as an enrolled agent to satisfy an audit, set up a payment agreement , file late tax returns or make an offer in compromise. The impoverished are vulnerable to disreputable scams, falling further into economic hardship, and giving up hopes of becoming compliant. Low Income Tax Clinics offer services to educate, advise and represent low income taxpayers.
