Medford Public Schools Closed On Good Friday
The decision was made by district leadership this week to cancel classes.
MEDFORD, MA — Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Galusi announced that the district will be closed on Friday, April 3.
Galusi made the decision on Tuesday, citing expected large-scale staff absences on the day due to the Catholic religious holiday Good Friday.
“There will not be enough staff in any school building to safely and effectively support teaching, learning, and building operations for students,” Galusi said. “The district has been closely monitoring staff attendance on all religious holidays, including the upcoming Good Friday. In balancing the needs of the school calendar and building operations, we held meetings with Union leaders across all departments. Following these discussions, absence totals continued to climb at an even higher rate.”

She expressed regret at having to cancel classes on relatively short-notice, and said that the district will evaluate its current policies and operations this coming summer with the goal of improving this procedure.
Due to the closure, the last day of school throughout the district will now be on Thursday, June 25. Roberts Elementary School only will have a half-day on Friday, June 26 in order to make up for the two days in December when the institution at 35 Court St. had to cease operations due to a suspected Norovirus outbreak.
