NEWTON, MA — A new café dedicated to a well-known Newton figure is on the verge of officially opening, Mayor Marc Laredo announced.
The Cooper Café is launching on Wednesday, May 6 for a “kick-off” launch event. The restaurant will be located on the first floor of the Cooper Center for Active Living at 345 Walnut St. The Center itself opened last December. The three-floor, 33,000 square-foot is open seven days per week and offers community activities of the athletic, recreational, artistic, and cultural varieties.
Cooper made many positive contributions to the city up until her death in 2021. She was a driving force behind the opening of early childcare and after school programs of Family Access of Newton. In addition, she also served leadership roles in the Newton Free Library’s Board of Trustees, Newton Senior Center Steering Committee, and the Ward 3 Democratic Committee.
“This woman cared about everyone in our community. She was passionate about children and students,” Former Mayor Ruthanne Fuller said about Cooper. “This woman was gentle and kind and yet was one of the strongest and most determined people I’ll ever know. She was a positive, infectious force.”
After a successful soft trial launch in April, the café is preparing to be open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays serving breakfast and lunch between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. The kitchen will be headed by Chef Jocelina Teixeira, who runs Little Crepe Café on Oxford Street in Cambridge. The 10-year restaurant business veteran will oversee a group of volunteers.
“I’m really excited. It’s going to be so much fun,” Teixeira said. ““I feel very, very happy when I’m able to give people a good meal. Meals bring people together.”
