CONCORD, NH — Two men lost their lives during a boating accident near Bear Island Saturday, the second largest island on Lake Winnipesaukee. According to the New Hampshire State Police – Marine Patrol, the accident occurred on the north side of the island just before 6:15 p.m. Fire boats with EMTs from Gilford, Laconia, and Meredith responded to the area where a 20-foot Sea Ray boat was found adrift.

"Aboard the boat was an injured female passenger who was suffering from head injuries," according to Capt. Tim Dunleavy of the Marine Patrol. "She was transported to the Meredith Town Docks located next to Shep Brown’s Boat Basin and later to Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The operator of the boat, a male, was pronounced dead at the scene."

As the investigation continued last night and this morning, officials determined that there was probably another boat involved in the incident.

"While investigating the cause of the accident, Marine Patrol Officers received a report of a possible missing boater from Bear Island," Dunleavy said. "Evidence collected at the scene was determined to match the description of the missing boater’s vessel."

State police in a helicopter and divers searched the area and found a second boat in about 48 feet of water. A man was located on the submerged boat, according to the report.

"Through the initial evidence obtained at the scene and a witness account, it is believed that the two vessels collided with one another while under way; however, all facts and circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation," Dunleavy said.

The names of those involved are being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.

Marine Patrol is requesting anyone who may have witnessed this incident or may have heard anything on the water in the area of Bear, Pine or Three Mile Islands, to please contact Sergeant Dave Ouellette at Marine Patrol, 603-227-2111.

Maine Man After Chase

A Sanford, Maine, man was arrested Friday after a high-speed chase through a number of towns in the eastern part of the state.

State police received calls at 8 a.m. about an erratic vehicle on Route 16 South in Milton. The vehicle, according to report, had stopped in the middle of the road, was swerving, struck a guardrail, and had a near miss with another vehicle.

A trooper located the vehicle, a Subaru Crosstrek, on Route 125 in Milton and attempted to stop it but it kept driving, according to Lt. John Hennessey of Troop A.

"A pursuit was initiated that continued both northbound and southbound on Route 125 in the town of Milton and the city Rochester," he said. "The vehicle then proceeded down Route 75 westbound toward the town of Farmington. Eventually, the operator of the vehicle stopped at the intersection of Route 75 and 153 in the town of Farmington."

Marc Horowitz, 48, pictured, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless operation, and disobeying an officer. He's due in Rochester District Court on Dec. 11.

Canadian Trucker Crashes On I-89

Before 1 a.m. Friday, state police were called to Enfield for a report of a crash. When they arrived, they found a truck had rolled, due to the icy road conditions as well as rain and sleet, and the driver, a 50-year-old man from Saint-Laurent, Quebec, pinned under the dash of the driver's seat.

Fire and rescue teams from Lebanon extricated him from the vehicle and took him to Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital with minor injuries.

"Several pallets of bread that were inside the box truck spilled into the median," stated Sgt. Irwin Malilay of Troop D. "The removal of the box truck and spillage of materials caused the left lane to be closed for several hours."

Lebanon Fire and Rescue, the NH DOT and Corey Patten’s Auto & Truck Works assisted the state police. The crash is still under investigation at this time.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is encouraged to contact Trooper Kenneth McGrath of the New Hampshire State Police, Troop D at 603-227-0088.
