Sobriety Checkpoint Coming To Portsmouth
The Rockingham County Superior Court has authorized the checkpoint to be held sometime this week, according to police.

PORTSMOUTH, NH — The Portsmouth Police Department will be hosting a sobriety checkpoint in an effort to nab drunk drivers, according to a press alert. The Rockingham County Superior Court, according to police Chief Robert Merner, has authorized the checkpoint in the city for sometime this week. He noted that checkpoints “have had proven success in the apprehension of drunk drivers” in Portsmouth and elsewhere.
“We are confident that these upcoming checkpoints will be no exception,” he added. “Motorists are forewarned that we will make every effort to apprehend drunk drivers and ask that patrons of bars and restaurants in the Seacoast make the right choice: use designated drivers, cabs or call a friend; when you drink and drive you risk your life and put others’ lives in danger.”

Sobriety checkpoints are supported by the New Hampshire branch of Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the use of checkpoints to deter drunk driving has been approved by the New Hampshire Supreme Court, Merner noted.
The announcement in Portsmouth comes at the same time that the New Hampshire State Police announced another checkpoint on the Seacoast in Seabrook, coordinated by police there and in Hampton.
