An Experience of a Lifetime: Huntington Students Tour Peru

They climbed Mayan ruins in Belize, toured Machu Picchu, took a boat ride to Money Island and took in plenty of picturesque views.

What did you do during your mid-winter break?

A group of 34 Huntington High School students and several teachers hiked Machu Picchu, toured famous sites in Cusco, hiked through the Amazon jungle and had a sunset diner overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Lima.

“Our week in Peru was an exciting journey that offered so many unique experiences,” Ms. Tedeschi said to Huntington Union Free School District.

The group went to Lima, Cusco, Pisac, Machu Picchu and Puerto Maldonado, according to a post on the Huntington Union Free School District Facebook page

  • Climb Mayan ruins in Belize and Incan ruins in Peru.
  • Take a boat ride and hike to Monkey Island, where students fed monkeys, bird watched and took in nature.
  • Take a boat ride at night to look for Cayman and view the stars.
  • Hike in the jungle and watch Cayman feed on fish in the wild.
  • Shop at a traditional Indian market town.
  • Visit Korikancha Temple, the cathedral, Sacsayhuaman fortress, the ruins at Kenko and Tambomachay.
  • Take a guided excursion of Machu Picchu.

“The students were able to experience and explore the culture and history of Peru while gaining first- hand knowledge of the past,” Tedeschi said to the school district. “ There are no words that can actually describe the experience of Machu Picchu and the photographs as amazing as they are still do not capture the extraordinary experience and beauty of the site.”

It was a private trip and not subsidized by the Huntington School District.

Students have the choice of touring Costa Rica, the Grand Canyon and Tanzania in 2016 and Brussels and Galapagos in 2017.
