Hudson Valley Election 2018: Upsets, Squeakers, Cruises
The Hudson Valley helped flip the New York State Senate to Democratic control.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — State, regional and local races in the Hudson Valley led to some upsets, a few squeakers and several cruises to victory. Absentee ballots have to be counted. All results are unofficial until certified by boards of election.
Democrat Peter Harckham ousted state Senator Terrence Murphy from the 40th District seat, contributing to a blue wave in the New York State Senate.

Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell beat her challenger by 12 percentage points, according to unofficial results from the Board of Elections.

Longtime Congresswoman Nita Lowey cruised to re-election over "Average Joe" Ciardulli. Patch called it early and also called the elections for Gov. Andrew Cuomo and US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, both Hudson Valley residents.
The number of votes received are next to the candidates' names below. When the race is called, the winner will be in italics.
All vote results are unofficial until the count is certified which can take a couple of weeks.

U.S. Senate
Chele Chiavacci Farley, 51, is a partner and managing director of Mistral Capital International. She served as finance chairwoman for New York City when she was appointed to the position by the state Republican Party. She is a New York City resident. Gillibrand, 51, has been the junior senator from New York since 2009, when she was appointed to fill the vacancy created when Hillary Clinton became secretary of state in the Obama administration. She's a resident of Brunswick, Rensselaer County.

Governor
Two Hudson Valley residents were foes. Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo was challenged by Marc Molinaro, the Republican Dutchess County executive. Cuomo, who lives in Mount Kisco and who scored a September primary win over Cynthia Nixon, ran on his liberal record, arguing he'll defend New York against the attacks of President Donald Trump. But Molinaro cast Cuomo as a bully under whom corruption has festered in making his case to voters that it's time for a change.

Incumbent Democratic Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney handily won re-election Tuesday, besting challenger James O'Donnell, according to unofficial results with all election districts reporting. Maloney has represented the district since 2013. O'Donnell is an Orange County legislator. The district covers Somers, North Salem, Lewisboro, Bedford, Pound Ridge, part of North Castle, part of Yorktown, and part of New Castle.

Antonio Delgado is the winner of the 19th Congressional District race, unseating incumbent Rep. John Faso in a victory that contributed to Democrats taking back the House.
The district is comprised of Columbia, Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties and parts of Broome, Dutchess, Montgomery and Rensselaer counties.

Alessandra Biaggi cemented her defeat of Independent Democratic Conference leader Jeff Klein, leading all contenders with 268 of 274 precincts reporting as of Wednesday morning. Klein, who was on the ballot on the Independence Party line, was trounced, receiving only 7 percent of the vote.
The district is comprised of part of Pelham, part of City of New Rochelle, part of City of Mount Vernon, part of Town of Eastchester, and parts of the Bronx.

Mayer Wins In 37th Senate District Race

State Senator David Carlucci faced a second challenge from former Rockland County Executive Scott Vanderhoef to represent the people of the 38th NY Senate District. Carlucci has been in office since 2010.

Carlucci easily beat back a second challenge from Vanderhoef to represent the people of the 38th NY Senate District, which includes much of Rockland and a bite out of the Westchester shore of the Hudson River. He picked up 63 percent of the vote.
With all districts reporting:

Carlucci survived a Democratic challenge in the primaries. He was one of only two members of the Independent Democratic Conference, which disbanded this spring, to survive. His challenger, Julie Goldberg, ran to the left of Carlucci and came within 2,000 votes.

Vanderhoef also made Carlucci's IDC time a campaign issue, saying that Carlucci was more concerned with currying favor with political bosses than helping the people he was elected to serve. Ethics, the environment and fiscal responsibility were his top priorities, he said.

With 230 of 249 election districts reporting, James Skoufis declared victory over Tom Basile. The district is comprised of parts of Orange, Rockland and Ulster counties.

Pete Harckham looks to have squeaked by Terrence Murphy to help turn the New York Senate blue. But the results are very close, there were 2,386 blank ballots, and absentee ballots aren't counted yet.
The district is comprised of parts of Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester counties, including Beekman and Pawling in Dutchess; Brewster, Carmel, Patterson and Southeast in Putnam; and Briarcliff Manor, Buchanan, Cortlandt, Croton-on-Hudson, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, Mount Pleasant, New Castle, North Salem, Peekskill, Pleasantville, Pound Ridge, Sleepy Hollow, Somers and Yorktown in Westchester.
As of Wednesday morning with with 276 of 277 districts reporting, the state Board of Elections had these totals:

Incumbent Republican Sen. James L. Seward easily won re-election over challenger Joyce St George Tuesday, according to unofficial totals with all districts reporting. Seward was first elected to the state Senate in 1986. The district covers the towns of Hardenburgh, Shandaken, Olive and Rochester in Ulster County and all or part of eight other counties.

Jonathan Jacobson will be the next Assemblyman for the 104th District, according to unofficial results. The district is comprised of the town and city of Newburgh in Orange County, the towns of Lloyd and Marlborough in Ulster County and the cities of Poughkeepsie and Beacon in Dutchess County.
This district was represented by Frank Skartado until his death in April 2018. Jacobson, 65, is an attorney and is a Newburgh city councilman. Manley, 56, is the deputy supervisor for the Town of Newburgh.

Sheriff
Figueroa, 53, won the Democratic primary for Ulster County Sheriff, besting VanBlarcum, with 92 percent of election districts reporting. Figueroa works in corporate security an previously worked in the New York State Police. Van Blarcum, 62, has been Ulster County Sheriff since 2007. He has been with the sheriff's office since 1976.

Putnam County
There were three countywide elections: for county executive, county clerk and county coroner. County Clerk Michael C. Bartolotti and County Coroner John F. Bourges are unopposed.
Incumbent MaryEllen Odell was challenged for the county executive post by current Kent town Supervisor Maureen Fleming. Odell, who has been in office seven years, ran on her record, emphasizing broadening the tax base and services for veterans and senior citizens. Fleming accused Odell of cronyism, spending money unwisely on pet projects including the Putnam Golf Course, Tilly Foster Farm and the Philipstown Senior Center.

Incumbent village Mayor Victoria Gearity apparently fended off a challenge in the general election as she did in the Democratic primary, from Trustee Omar Herrera, in a race that grew contentious. Herrera will stay on the board. His term is up at the end of 2019.

Jackie G. Shaw ran unopposed for an unexpired term on the Ossining Town Council.
