Eighteen of the 26 cyclists lost their lives in Brooklyn crashes.
Eleven of the cyclists crashed in the dark, or after sunset and before sunrise. Seven died during rush hours, between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. or between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Nine died in the middle of the day.
Two of the cyclists were doored, two struck by hit-and-run drivers (not including Hightman who was hit by a truck driver who left and returned), 10 were hit by trucks and one was killed by a drunken driver.
Four people died while riding e-bikes. One of those cyclists, Charles Cheeseboro, was not involved in a car crash but died after he hit a pedestrian in Central Park.
Patch's count of cyclist fatalities in 2019 is 27, one more than Department of Transportation and NYPD reports. Donald Roberts, the cyclist run over by an SUV driver now facing murder charges, is included here, but not in officials' tallies, because his death was deemed a homicide.
Four cyclists were killed before their 18th birthdays.

Update: This list has been corrected to include Robert Sommers and remove Fernando Trejo, who was a pedestrian and not a cyclist. It was also updated to reflect that DOT and NYPD statistics differ, since Donald Roberts' death was marked as a homicide, not a traffic fatality. Patch will continue to update this list, map and data as new information comes in.
