Gas Outage: Over 5,100 Successfully Restored
As of Sunday morning, more than 80 percent of Newport residents had gas service restored. All schools will be open Monday.

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The end of the gas outage is in sight for long-suffering Newport residents. As of Sunday morning, more than 80 percent of customers had gas service restored, including all of Newport's Public Schools.
Once pressure was returned to the system early Saturday afternoon, National Grid crews immediately began the relighting process, starting with areas deemed to be the most important, including Newport's schools. Classes will resume across the island on Monday.
Of the 6,400 Newport residents affected by the outage, more than 5,100 had service restored as of Sunday morning.

To help streamline the relighting process, National Grid is asking those who have not yet had service restored to be available at their homes and businesses. Free transportation back to homes is available for those who need it through the Red Cross, Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) buses, or the Newport Fire Department, who can be reached at 401-845-5934.
As of 8:00 AM, 100% of the 150 critical support facilities identified by the Town have been restored. The Company had encouraged customers to be at their home or business yesterday to grant access to technicians who were spread out across all neighborhoods.

To keep track of who has had gas service restored, National Grid technicians are placing stickers on the door of completed houses. Customers are asked to leave the sticker in place until restoration is complete for everyone.

Customers are encouraged to stay overnight in hotel rooms or alternate accommodations until their service has been restored.

- King Park, 67 Wellington Ave.
