WASHINGTON, DC — President Joe Biden’s latest approval rating dropped six percentage points in July, the first time since Inauguration Day that his ratings have shown a significant change, according to a new Gallup poll.

The president’s job approval rating is currently at 50 percent, down from 56 percent in June. Gallup polled 1,007 adults between July 6 and July 21. Forty-five percent said they disapproved of his performance while 5 percent didn’t have an opinion.

The latest rating comes during a tumultuous and unpredictable period in the U.S. economy, the poll notes. Vaccinations rates against COVID-19 are slowing and consumers are paying higher prices for gas and other goods. The drop could also be attributed to Biden’s struggle to achieve greater bipartisanship, a key promise made during his campaign.

However, those who approved of his performance noted declining unemployment and stock market values at near-record highs.

When broken down by political party, only 12 percent of Republicans give the president a positive job approval rating in comparison to 90 percent of Democrats and 48 percent of independents.

Biden’s approval rating for the second quarter, or April 20 through July 19, was 53.3 percent — higher than those of presidents from the past three decades, Gallup notes.

The second-quarter average for Bill Clinton was 44.0 percent, Donald Trump was 38.8 percent and George W. Bush's average was 55.8 percent.

Barack Obama, at 62 percent, is the only other president during this period to have a significantly higher second-quarter average than Biden.
