Fundraiser Started by Democrats Raises $13K to Help Rebuild Firebombed NC GOP Office

The Orange County GOP office was firebombed, and racist graffiti was found on a nearby building.

HILLSBOROUGH, NC — The firebombing of a local Republican Party headquarters in North Carolina left it severely damaged, forcing volunteers to work out of a mobile office on Monday. The violence was condemned by Democrats and Republicans alike, and an online fundraiser started by Democrats has raised just over $13,000 to help rebuild the Orange County GOP office.

"As Democrats, we are starting this campaign to enable the Orange County, North Carolina Republican office to re-open as soon as possible," the fundraiser says. In an update, the campaign said that just after 40 minutes of going public, it met its goal of $10,000.

Comments posted on the fundraiser's all shared the theme that the effort had nothing to do with politics but was simply about people helping people, regardless of party affiliation.

"I absolutely agree with this effort. Republican, Democrat, Independent, Green Party, Libertarian, or other -- we are all AMERICANS," a person named Mark Bender wrote.

"Are folks really blaming Hillary for this? This is a really great, shining moment of compassion and consideration to repair what was lost during a awful event, and people will still find a way to avoid the thoughtfulness of many to focus on a person that had nothing to do with it. My god," wrote Gabe Mendoza.

Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump condemned the attack. At first Trump place the blame of those supporting Clinton and the Democrats. However, no arrests have been made, and local authorities have not named any persons of interest or said who might have been behind the attack.

The fundraising effort is not officially affiliated with the Democratic Party.
