Heavy Rains Ravage Parts of Mid-Atlantic

The stormy weather pattern is expected to gradually ease off after Monday.

Heavy rain pounded large parts of the country Saturday leading to massive flooding in some parts of the East Coast and causing at least two fatalities. More downpours are expected, with the National Weather Service warning of "multiple rounds of rain and thunderstorm activity" from the Midwest to the East Coast.

Two people died in the heavy flooding in Ellicott City, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore. The historic city was one of the worst affected by the weather with scenes of road collapses and sidewalks completely submerged by water. Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency in the city. As of 10 p.m. Saturday, a little more 6 inches of rain had fallen in Ellicott City.

In Princeton, New Jersey, heavy rainfall wreaked havoc and police warned residents to stay off the roads Saturday. Police received multiple reports of stranded vehicles attempting to navigate high waters and reported that roads were impassable in several spots.
