Mobile Apps Encourage Kids To Make A Difference By Simply Reading

Heifer International works around the world to end hunger and poverty through climate smart agriculture.

Heifer International, a world-renowned organization ending hunger and poverty, is celebrating their 80th anniversary this year. Generous donors to Heifer provide farmers in communities of need all over the world with livestock, seeds, training, and support so they can become self-reliant farmers and break the boundaries of poverty.

For over 20 years, Heifer International has encouraged grade school students to help families in need while improving their literacy with a program called “Read to Feed.” What began as an offline reading program is now available in 2 app experiences (one for readers in grades K through 6th, another for older readers) that encourage reading to help hungry families.

Through these innovative apps, both students and parents track the time spent reading or books read, which tally up points that correspond to unlocking donations for Heifer’s work through their corporate partners. There’s even a library of books and short stories available for in-app reading. Kids can also make a bigger impact by collecting sponsors and donations.

Generosity and compassion are two of the most important lessons parents can teach their children. Read to Feed is available for both elementary and secondary aged students and is a way for children to see themselves as part of the solution to end hunger by reading.
