Possible Botulism Contamination Forces Snapchill Canned Coffee Recall

The coffee was distributed across the U.S. through various coffee roasters and retailers, and were directly bought online through Snapchill.

GREEN BAY, WI — All Snapchill canned coffee products distributed nationwide have been recalled due to possible botulism contamination, according to a U.S. Food Drug and Administration notice.

Snapchill, a Wisconsin-based company, voluntarily recalled its canned coffee Monday due to potential contamination of Clostridium botulinum, also known as the food-poisoning form of botulism.

" ... their current process could lead to the growth and production of the deadly toxin, botulinum toxin, in low acid canned foods," read the FDA notice regarding the recalled products.

The potential contamination was discovered when the FDA notified Snapchill that the low acidic canned foods process for manufacturing these products was not filed with the FDA, per regulation, according to the notice.

Snapchill said the canned coffee, sold under multiple roaster and brand names, varied from 7 ounces to 12 ounces in can sizes. The company said the recalled products can be identifiable with the phrase, “Produced and distributed by Snapchill LLC,” scribed underneath the nutrition facts panel.

Another identifier is the text, “Snapchill Coffee,” on the label, according to the notice.

As of Monday, at the time the recall notice was filed, no illnesses had been reported.

"Snapchill is not aware of any instances in which the company’s products contained botulin toxin. Snapchill is working on filing the appropriate notification with FDA," read the notice.

Symptoms of botulism, which could be deadly, are as follows: general weakness, dizziness, double-vision, trouble with speaking or swallowing, difficulty in breathing, weakness of other muscles, abdominal distension and constipation.

If a person develops botulism, symptoms can occur from six hours to two weeks after the consumption of a food that contains botulinum toxin, according to the notice. People who have symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.

Customers who purchased the items can either destroy the coffee or return it to either Snapchill or the point of purchase for a refund. With proof of purchase, Snapchill said it will offer full refunds for affected products.

Snapchill can be reached from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. CT Monday-Friday, (920) 632-6018.
