Michigan Teacher Gets Probation For Offering Sex For Better Grade

A teacher was sentenced to probation time after reportedly offering to give a student a better grade in exchange for sexual acts.

HARPER WOODS, MI — A Harper Woods teacher, who was found guilty earlier this year on accusations that he offered to improve a student's grade in exchange for sex, will spend five years on probation and three months in jail.

Charles Penn, a former Harper Woods teacher, was convicted by a jury on May 24 of accosting a child for immoral purposes. A 15-year-old student accused him of offering to raise her grade to a “B” if she performed a sex act on him, Fox 2 reported. Penn also reportedly told her he would give her an “A” if she did it twice.

Penn was fired from the school district when the student made the accusations in June 2018. He was economics teacher of 15 years.

Another student said she heard the exchange and testified and Fox 2 reported that during his preliminary hearing in January that Penn said he was serious. The two girls left the room at that point and told another teacher, the report said.

Penn initially faced four years in prison. Instead, he was sentenced to five years probation and 3 months of jail time, which is to be served at the end of his probation. He'll also have to serve 100 hours of community service.
