📰 News we're reading

1. Braiding with the Blue: SRO builds bonds with students through hair (wtkr.com) — A Chesapeake school resource officer at Indian River Middle is using an after-school braiding club to build trust with girls while teaching hygiene, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy. The two-year-old "Braiding with the Blue" program also introduces students to Chesapeake Public Schools' cosmetology pathway, and the officer hopes to expand it into a nonprofit serving more local communities.

2. Two Hampton Roads cities take measures to restrict data centers (virginiabusiness.com) — Chesapeake City Council has ended by-right approval for data centers, meaning every new project must now get council's explicit OK and meet stricter zoning limits. The move follows strong resident opposition over noise, land use, and environmental impacts, and council is even asking Virginia's attorney general whether the city can legally ban data centers altogether.

3. Fire damages conveyor system at Chesapeake Amazon facility (wavy.com) — A small fire Wednesday at Amazon's Portsmouth Boulevard fulfillment center in Chesapeake briefly shut the building but caused only minimal damage to a second-floor conveyor system and no injuries. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, ventilated lingering smoke, and the facility remained closed only until the next scheduled shift.

4. Lawyers in massive Perwaiz lawsuit fight for hospital documents as judge makes mixed ruling on discovery (wtkr.com) — Attorneys for more than 1,000 women suing Chesapeake Regional Medical Center are pressing a Chesapeake judge for internal hospital records they say could show what officials knew about former OB-GYN Javaid Perwaiz's misconduct. The court issued a mixed discovery ruling, while a separate federal settlement with the hospital over alleged false billing still awaits approval.

5. General Dynamics Mission Systems Wins $15.6M Navy Contract for Shipset Systems Development (envzone.com) — The Navy has awarded General Dynamics Mission Systems a $15.6 million contract modification for shipboard systems work spread across several cities, including a small portion in Chesapeake. While most of the work will occur elsewhere, some development and installation support will be performed locally through August 2027, tying Chesapeake into a broader naval technology effort.
