PHOTOS: Hollin Hall Senior Center Holds Open House

Bob Francke of Paul Spring ended up at the ’s mini open house Monday after listening to the advice of his friends.

“Some guys talked me into it,” said Francke, who is particularly interested in history classes and clubs. “They insisted I join.”

The senior center held an open house Monday afternoon for new and prospective members. Among them was Norris Ross of Gum Springs, a prospective member interested in learning more about the center, particularly its exercise offerings. 

“I’m looking for something to help with balance,” she said. “I go to Curves, and I needed something in addition to that, so this looks like the place.”

Center Director Julie Ellis said the senior center now numbers about 800 members from the surrounding community who partake in hundreds of classes, clubs and trips every year. Membership is $48 per year, which goes directly to Fairfax County to help fund the center. The senior center also receives additional state funding for certain programs.

Volunteer Jan Kestyn, who led the tour group Monday, said new members are usually excited about all the center has to offer.

“It’s amazing,” she said. “Some have heard word of mouth, some have seen the advertisements. Some have a friend that’s been coming here. Some have just turned 55 and say, ‘Oh, I’m eligible for the senior center,’ because that’s the age. 

“So I just try to give them some information and find out what they’re interested in so they’ll start coming.”
