Board Passes McKay's Request to Review Building Code Enforcement

Supervisor Jeff McKay's request to have building code enforcements reviewed in the future was approved Tuesday during the Board of Supervisors meeting. McKay said in a statement that Fairfax County has made significant progress in making code enforcements more responsive to the needs of county residents.

The General Assembly has also supported efforts by passing legislation to reduce appeal time periods and made it easier to obtain inspection warrants. However, McKay said issues with building codes still need to be addressed.

"Currently, upon written request by the holder of a building permit, the Fairfax County building official may grant one or more extensions of time, not to exceed one year per extension. In my District, as well as across the county, these extensions can leave communities with partially built structures that are both eyesores and hazards," McKay said in his statement.

During the meeting, McKay used as examples properties in the Lee District, including properties on Calamo Street and Grace Street, and requested the county attorney review Fairfax County's ability to act in the matter.

McKay also requested the recognition of Rick Taube, executive director for Northern Virginia Transportation Commission (NVTC), who is retiring after 30 years of service to Fairfax County.

He also requested recognition for members of multiple county departments who assisted in the clean-up of the property on Cinder Bed Road in early January. All three of McKay's board matters were approved during Tuesday's meeting.
