Kingstowne Family In Need After Fire Destroys Home

The residents safely escaped but are in need of necessities like clothing and food. Here's how you can help.

KINGSTOWNE, VA—A Kingstowne family is asking for help after a fire destroyed their home on Friday, Feb. 2. Six members of the Hunt family are displaced from the townhouse and are receiving Red Cross assistance. No one was injured in the fire.

The best way to help the family is to send donations on a GoFundMe page or by mail. Sharon Hunt, who lives with her daughter Kyra, nephew Jason, and grandchildren, started the page after they were forced out of the home. The page states, "the family is in need of food, clothes, shoes, and household items." Donations will also to cover their housing needs until they can return home and the restoration costs.

The family will also accept gift cards mailed to 6228 Les Dorson Ln Alexandria, VA 22315.

The three children living at the home are boys between ages 10-16, while the oldest is a 19-year-old girl currently attending Norfolk State University. Meanwhile Sharon has seen her income drop after retiring last month.

Firefighters from Fairfax County and Fort Belvoir responded to the fire last Friday afternoon in the in the 6200 block of Les Dorson Lane. Crews quickly located and extinguished the fire in the back of the three-story townhome. Three residents were home at the time and escaped after smelling smoke. The smoke alarms had been disabled and did not alert the residents to the fire.

Fire investigators have determined incense left unattended started the fire in the garage. The fire caused $73,870 in damages, including damage to a neighboring home's siding.
