Kingstowne Residents Talk Debt Ceiling

Debt deadline is set for Tuesday

With the deadline for an agreement on raising the national debt ceiling agreement approaching, Kingstowne residents have begun to express their anxiety over the hotly debated issue.

“The government provides stability for America and if it collapses there is little stability left in our nation,” recent high school graduate Larry Schuler said. “I think Republicans and Democrats should come to a consensus about the debt as quickly as possible.”

Local resident Johanna Spera agrees that the government has drawn out the national debt debate for too long.

“It’s a shame that we have to wait until the last minute to decide something of great importance to everyone,” she said.

If an agreement between Republicans and Democrats is not reached by August 2, President Obama has said that the US Government will enter a default period where the government will be without funding and unable to make payments. There is a possibility, however, that the government has enough funding to hold off default until August 10.

“They [the government] really need to look at our biggest deficits and then dispense them evenly so that we do not fall into a default,” Prince William County teacher and Kingstowne resident Sharon Shaffer said.

“Either way I’m still going to have to pay more taxes,” she added.
