New Year Brings New Laws to Virginia
Prison accounts, rules for electoral boards among legislation that goes into effect this month

While most new laws in Virginia go into effect on July 1, a few laws went into effect on January 1:
- HB 1508 - Establishes new rules preventing relatives of political candidates from serving on local electoral boards.
- HB 1588 - Puts the burden of proof on the taxpayer in real estate appraisal appeals.
- HB 2225/SB923 - Establishes a trust account for each inmate in the Virginia Department of Corrections, to be given to them upon release. Ten percent is taken from all the prisoner receives and put in the account, until it reaches $1,000.
