Englin Pot Resolution Dies in Committee
Resolution would have called for reclassification of marijuana from Schedule I to II.
Del. David Englin’s resolution asking Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell to petition the federal Drug Enforcement Agency to reclassify marijuana failed in General Assembly Tuesday.
The Washington Post reports that the resolution, HJ139, would have requested that McDonnell petition the Administrator of the DEA to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to Schedule II.
According to the resolution, “the DEA currently lists marijuana as a Schedule I drug, for which there is no known medical use.”

But Englin argues that there is indeed a medical use for the drug. “…When used in accordance with an approved plan of medical care, cannabis offers numerous health benefits for individuals suffering from a range of health disorders,” the resolution reads.
The House Rules Committee tabled the bill in a voice vote Tuesday.
