Park Authority to Demolish Some Buildings at Banks Park

Park could have space for community gardens or a dog park

The Fairfax County Park Authority has started to demolish buildings around Banks Park, according to a press release from the FCPA.

The outbuildings are part of a plan to turn the ten-acre space on Old Telegraph Road near Hayfield Road into a park. The land was given to the Park Authority by Olander Banks Sr. in 2001. Banks continued living on the property until his death in January 2011.

As part of the construction, the Park Authority will also remove an underground storage tank. The project is expected to be completed later in January.

"Banks Park is a rare opportunity to provide an open green space in an existing urban area with opportunities to interact with nature and provide social interaction spaces and a focal point for the local community," reads the master plan for the park (PDF).

The plan, published in May, includes ideas for how to use some of the park's empty spaces, including a proposed dog park and community garden.
