Virginia Elections 2013: New McAuliffe Ad Targets Attorney General's Office Investigation
A new attack ad questions Ken Cuccinelli's ethics, but the GOP says McAuliffe is distorting the facts about an investigation over natural gas royalties.

byĀ William Callahan
The campaign for Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidateTerry McAuliffeĀ released another advertisement Tuesday criticizing Republican opponent Ken Cuccinelli over his officeās role in anĀ ongoing investigation over natural gas royalties.
Virginiaās inspector general is looking into the office after a staffer supposedly gave advice to two Pennsylvania energy companies embroiled in a lawsuit with Southwest Virginians who say the companies have withheldĀ royalties after mining on their land.
The caseĀ drew the attention of a federal judgeĀ in June but news of an official investigationĀ broke Tuesday.
The ad, titled āLandowners,ā attempts to discredit theĀ GOPās recent offensive against McAuliffeĀ over a federal investigation into the Democratās former car company,Ā GreenTech Automotive, and its investment practices.
āKen Cuccinelliās attacks on Terry McAuliffe twist the facts, and have been called false and ridiculous,ā says the narrator in the spot. āThe truth is, itās Cuccinelli who has an ethics problem.
āCuccinelliās office is now under investigation by the Inspector General of Virginia for secretly helping an energy company thatās taking gas from landowners, but refusing to pay them.ā
LikeĀ a similar ad sponsored by DemocratsĀ in July, Wednesdayās spot also questions why one of the companies in the lawsuit donated $100,000 to Cuccinelliās campaign for governor.
Cuccinelli has said his office followed protocol and did nothing wrong.
Furthermore, Inspector General Michael Morehart has clarified that Cuccinelli is not the subject of the investigation; rather, heās investigating an employee in the attorney generalās office,Ā reports the Virginian-Pilot.
The GOP says this is another instance of McAuliffe bending the truth to look better than his opponent.
McAuliffe has been accused of doing the same when discussing his support for Gov. Bob McDonnellās historic transportation package, a piece of legislation that critics say McAuliffe had absolutely nothing to do with.
