📰 News we're reading

1. Lynchburg council makes decision on Flock cameras in response to concerns (roanoke.com) — Lynchburg City Council has voted 6-0 to end its contract with Flock Safety, meaning 15 license-plate cameras and 54 gunshot detection devices will be removed by next spring and the city will stop further payments. The move follows resident privacy concerns and similar decisions in nearby counties, while council members say they'll keep seeking crime-fighting tools that require more traditional legal safeguards.

2. VDACS Breaks Ground on Expansion Across Three Regional Animal Health Laboratories (morningagclips.com) — Virginia agriculture officials have kicked off a major expansion of regional animal health labs, including significant new space and testing capabilities at the Lynchburg facility. The upgrades will boost disease surveillance, food safety testing, and diagnostic services that local veterinarians, farmers, and pet owners rely on, strengthening both public health and the region's agricultural economy.

3. 50 degrees hotter: Inside ABC13's parked car experiment (wset.com) — A Lynchburg heat experiment by ABC13 shows a parked car can become about 50 degrees hotter than the already near-100-degree air, quickly melting candy, crayons, and lipstick. Using a heat gun, they also found local playground equipment and ground surfaces reaching 130 to 160 degrees, underscoring how dangerous brief errands or outdoor play can be during extreme heat.

4. $3B Appomattox data center moves forward in face of community opposition (roanoke.com) — A $3 billion data center in Appomattox County is moving ahead under a performance agreement, even as Lynchburg-area communities tighten rules on similar projects. Lynchburg City Council now requires conditional use permits for data centers, while Campbell and Amherst counties have shifted to special approvals, reflecting growing concern over noise, utilities, and environmental impacts across the region.
