With Wegmans plans moving ahead and independent bookstore Bards Alley opening, there was plenty to talk about in Vienna this year.

VIENNA, VA—It's been a big year for business in Vienna from exciting new openings to announcements of future developments and goodbyes to beloved businesses.

1. Wegmans, Conference Center Plan Approved In Tysons

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the Wegmans and conference center at the Capital One headquarters development in Tysons. Wegmans has gotten on board and is slated to open in late 2018. In addition, the development will include 800 apartment units as well as a conference center with an auditorium for corporate training and performing arts, a black box performance space and two classrooms.

2. Mike Isabella's Tysons Food Hall Sets Opening Date

Award-winning DC chef Mike Isabella's nine-concept food hall in Tysons Galleria opened in phases beginning Dec. 11. All nine concepts of Isabella Eatery are expected to open by the end of the year.

3. Bards Alley Bookstore Opens In Vienna

Vienna resident Jen Morrow opened Bards Alley, an independent bookstore with a cafe, in October. Aside from offering a variety of books, Bard's Alley serves up rotating selections of beer, wine, locally-made bread, soup and more at its cafe. It also holds book clubs, author readings, book signings, children's storytime, poetry and writers' workshops.

4. Potomac River Running Opens Near W&OD Trail In Vienna

Potomac River Running Store has opened its doors at 111 Maple Ave West in Vienna with a fitting location next to the Washington and Old Dominion Trail. On first glance, Potomac River Running is a sports store selling athletic shoes, apparel and equipment. But among sports stores, the locally based Potomac River Running Store stands out for personalized service, especially for shoe fittings.

5. New Business In Town: La Favola Opens In Merrifield

If you're craving Italian food, there's a new option in La Favola, open at 2727-G Merrilee Drive in Merrifield. Founded by Del Ray's Bon Vivant Café + Farm Market owner Jawad Laouaouda and Chef Marco Tellaki, La Favola offers authentic, handcrafted Italian cuisine.

6. Teavana To Close Tysons Corner Store By Spring 2018

Starbucks announced it will close all 379 Teavana stores, including the one at Tysons Corner Center by spring 2018. The stores are mostly in malls, which have suffered from less foot traffic, Starbucks Chief Financial Officer Scott Harlan Maw told investors in a call.

7. Vienna Woman Uses Injury As Motivation For New Business

After a car accident , Vienna resident Day Martin was motivated to create a standing desk that can ease her back pain. Ever since, her online business "Stand Steady" on Amazon has been growing, selling products ranging from a $30 portable desk to the best seller $200 adjustable portable desk. She has a team based out of Dunn Loring to handle customer service while Amazon takes care of shipping.

8. New Cable Startup Layer3 Launches Internet Service

The Denver-based startup Layer3 TV, whose 2016 launch gave the D.C. area its first new cable TV service provider in over a decade, is now offering internet. The company announced Tuesday its 100 Mbps pureFiber internet, which offers unlimited data.

9. Single Mom Launches Nanny Platform In Fairfax County

Single, working mother Sara Duke launched cNanny, a hyperlocal web platforms that matches families with nannies. She came up with the idea from her own experiences trying to find the right child care provider for her daughter. The service is starting on hyperlocal basis in McLean, Vienna, Falls Church, Tysons Corner and Reston and could later expand.

10. Once Upon A Dream Entertainment Center Opens In Vienna

A new entertainment center in Vienna held its grand opening in November. Located at 527 Maple Ave. East, Suite 200, Once Upon A Dream is a 2,700-square-foot play center with a cafe area for adults.
