But before we jump into Southern California's top stories, residents should expect a brief respite from the heat before temperatures get even hotter later in the week.

After temperatures reached into the 90s in some parts of Southern California on Sunday, there will be a dramatic cool-down in the first half of the week. Highs are likely to top out in the 70s across much of the region on Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

"However, we are far from done with the heat as a prolonged period of widespread mid-80s to 90s will likely begin Thursday and may continue into next week," the NWS said.

Light rain is possible through Monday night in San Diego County, while the forecast is dry elsewhere.

In other news, a man was arrested Saturday after police in Long Beach say he intentionally ran over his 89-year-old father. Authorities arrived to find the man pinned under a vehicle, but were unable to save him.

Additionally, the Los Angeles Marathon was on Sunday and offered a true photo-finish moment for its first and second place men's winners. Michael Kamau of Kenya won the race by -00:01, in what marathon officials called the closest finish the event has ever seen.

Celebrations of Holi — the Hindu festival of colors — continued into the weekend, including events in Los Angeles. The annual celebrations welcome the start of spring using colored water and powders that devotees throw in the air and on each other.
