1. Grant Equips Columbus State University to Address Nursing Shortage (ortoday.com) — Columbus State University just secured a $461,000 state grant to hire another nursing faculty member and upgrade its simulation labs, expanding how many local students it can train. Leaders say this will strengthen Columbus' nursing workforce and support surrounding rural counties whose residents rely on the city's hospitals and clinics for care. 
2. Muscogee County Superior Court judge grants immunity to two Columbus police officers (wrbl.com) — A Muscogee County Superior Court judge has granted immunity to two Columbus police officers involved in a February 2024 shooting, meaning they will not stand trial. The judge agreed their use of deadly force was justified after the driver's car backfired during a traffic stop, and the man shot did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
3. Columbus launches volunteer disaster response training program (wtvm.com) — Columbus' Homeland Security and Emergency Management Department is reviving Community Emergency Response Team training so neighborhood volunteers can better handle disasters until first responders arrive. Oakland Park residents are the first 20 locals certified, and officials hope more Columbus neighborhoods and organizations will sign up to learn basic search-and-rescue, first aid, and safety skills. Interested groups can contact the county for future classes.
4. Honoring some of Columbus' most remarkable women: Sherrie Aaron (ledger-enquirer.com) — Columbus councilmember-elect Sherrie Aaron is being spotlighted as part of a Women's Equality Day series honoring local trailblazers. As the first out LGBTQ+ person elected to Columbus Council, she's focused on improving District 3—tackling blight, infrastructure, and support for South Columbus businesses—while promising to stay accessible to neighbors who helped elect her.
5. Mayor-elect Isaiah Hugley talks about how an HBCU education altered his life (wrbl.com) — Columbus Mayor-elect Isaiah Hugley told a UNCF fundraiser at Green Island Country Club how his Talladega College HBCU education helped him rise from Baker Village to the city's top job. Set to become Columbus' first Black elected mayor in January, he'll also play a key role in the Mayor's Masked Ball, the city's major UNCF fundraiser.
