Online Petition Launched to Save Movies 10
Theater set to be torn down to make way for Dick's Sporting Goods, DSW stores.

Two new businesses are coming to town, but the new ventures will mean the demolition of a discount movie theater — and some Joliet-area residents aren’t happy.
Last week, a resident launched a “Keep Movies 10” petition on Change.org, urging Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante and Cinemark executives to keep the theater, which shows mainly second-run movies, open.
Last week, Giarrante announced that the theater will be torn down to make way for a new Dick’s Sporting Goods store, along with a DSW shoe store. The theater, 2601 Plainfield Road, is located in the Louis Joliet Pointe shopping center across from Barnes & Noble.

Movies 10 became a discount theater, offering ticket prices as low as $1, after Cinemark opened a new theater in the Louis Joliet Mall in 2009. The nearby Movies 8 theater was torn down.
The Change.org petition notes that Movies 10 is affordable for families, adding, “We have enough shoe stores and sports stores. Why can’t they just leave Movies 10 alone and build where Movies 8 was bulldozed years ago ... ?”

As of Wednesday, the petition, which was launched Jan. 18, had more than 5,800 supporters. A Save Movies 10 Facebook page has also been created in an effort to keep the theater open.
