Latest Coronavirus Updates: 41 Confirmed Cases In Lemont Area

Here are the latest local updates on how the coronavirus outbreak is impacting Lemont.

LEMONT, IL — The new coronavirus outbreak in Illinois and across the country is having vast impacts in Lemont, including the closure of several local businesses, the library, park district and schools.

As of Tuesday, the number of cases in Illinois is 33,059 and 1,468 people have died from the coronavirus. As of April 21, there are 8,808 confirmed cases in suburban Cook County, and 356 deaths.

IDPH is now also sharing the number of tests performed in each ZIP code. For ZIP code 60439, 232 tests have been performed with a total of 41 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, as of April 21. According to the Cook County Health Department, there has also been 3 coronavirus related deaths in Lemont since March 16.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also recommended that everyone wear a cloth facial covering — not a medical mask, as those should be reserved for health care professionals — when they must go out in public.

Governor JB Pritzker has issued a stay-at-home order in effect until April 30. With this order, only essential businesses like grocery stores, pharmacies, gas stations and restaurants offering carry-out services can remain open.

Several libraries in the south suburbs have opened their book drops to collect donations of personal protective equipment for area hospitals and health care workers. MORE.

The village shared that the coronavirus pandemic will result in significant revenue losses in the general fund. Village administrator George Schafer said the village is projecting a $1.2 - $1.5 million revenue loss (sales tax, income tax and permit revenues) in the general fund. MORE.

The Lemont Park District is turning its popular touch-a-truck event into an on-the-go truck parade for the community April 25. Due to the coronavirus, the Lemont Park District is closed through at least April 30, but the parade will go on. The park district said there will be concrete trucks, fire engines, police cars, dump trucks and more making their way through town. MORE.

FOOD PANTRIES

In addition to the already operating Lemont food pantries, Lemont Township has set up a temporary food bank at its offices at 1115 Warner Ave. The other two pantries are located at Bethany Lutheran Church, 500 Lemont St.; and at Lemont United Methodist Church, 25 W. Custer St. MORE.

SCHOOLS

Schools across Illinois, and in New Lenox, will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. E-learning will still be taking place. MORE.

Although Lemont High School is now closed for the rest of the school year due to the coronavirus, several LHS teachers have still been working to provide protective masks for first responders in the area. MORE.

BUSINESSES

Lemont Patch is gathering information from local businesses to create a business directory for residents to access during this time. MORE.

HOSPITALS

Two meal trains have been created for the Silver Cross Hospital ICU and Emergency Room staff. MORE.

At Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, the hospital said as of April 15, it has 69 inpatients with known or suspected coronavirus. Of the 69 patients, 56 have tested positive for coronavirus and 13 are considered persons under investigation. All are being cared for in isolation. MORE.

NURSING HOMES

Lemont Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, otherwise known as Lemont Center, has five confirmed cases of coronavirus and one related death, the Illinois Department of Public Health reported Sunday. MORE.

A second resident at the Franciscan Village Mother Theresa Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has tested positive for the coronavirus, Franciscan Ministries said. The resident was taken to Silver Cross Hospital on April 16 due to a "change in condition," and tested positive for the coronavirus at the hospital April 17. MORE.

CANCELLATIONS/CLOSURES

The Archdiocese of Chicago has suspended all normal religious services until further notice. The Islamic Foundation of the Southwest Suburbs has also suspended its Friday services. MORE.

The Lemont Public Library will be closed through the month of April due to the stay-at-home order. The library plans to reopen May 4. Checked-out materials will not be due until after the library reopens.

The Lemont Park District remains closed through April 30, and all programs for April have been canceled. In addition, playgrounds, play equipment, basketball courts, pickleball courts, tennis courts, the pavilions, and the skate park are also all closed. Open space and trails are open. It has also rescheduled the Quarryman Challenge to November. MORE.

The Little Mountain Community Theatre in Lemont has announced it is postponing its planned 2020 season to summer 2021 due to the coronavirus. The theatre was planning on holding a children's acting workshop with a production of "Wizard of Oz Jr." and a main stage production of "Children of Eden." MORE.
