BROOKLINE, MA — Residents will head to the polls on Tuesday, May 5 to vote in the 2026 town election that features contested races.
Polls will be open between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m with specific polling places for each of the town’s 17 precincts. The deadline to register to vote was Saturday, April 25. Early voting was then open from that date before coming to a close on Friday, May 1. Leading off the contested races on the ballot is the race for a three-year term on the School Committee, with four candidates vying for three open positions. Laura Baines-Walsh, Faiza Khan, and Aylit Schultz are all hoping to earn their first opportunity to join the board, while incumbent Suzanne Federspiel is aiming for her fourth consecutive term. The Select Board has three candidates running for two seats worth three years, with long-time incumbent John VanScoyoc facing newcomers Amanda Zimmerman and Anthony Buono. Zimmerman is a bioengineer who has served on Brookline’s Bicycle Advisory Committee. Buono is a 26-year old data management consultant and Town Meeting member. Rounding out the contested races is that of Public Library Trustee. Five candidates are angling for a three-year term with just four open seats. Incumbents Chris Chanyasulkit and Marissa Vogt are running for reelection while being challenged by Amy Newell, Shawn O’Neal, and Petra Bignami.
Jonathan Klein is running unopposed for Housing Authority after incumbent Michael Jacobs chose not to run for reelection. A similar scenario is taking place with Town Constable with Public Library Trustee O’Neal running to replace Joseph Figler.
Voters will have to choose “yes” or “no” on a tax override worth $23,254,439. The Select Board approved the placement of the request in late March. It reportedly aims to save numerous positions in the public school district from being eliminated.
Patch will report the election results as soon as they are made available.
