MALDEN, MA — A downtown staple has shut down after a 50-year run.

The Hair Café officially closed its doors at the end of March, Mayor Gary Christenson announced. Judi Robinson opened the business in 1976 on 422 Main St., where it has been styling the Malden community since its first day of operation. Robinson and her staff built a loyal customer base throughout the decades with its services that included standard haircuts, professional coloring, and request-based styling. Robinson’s salon also offered permanent hair straightening, braiding, and makeup application for special occasions.

The owner was known for being a mentor to her staff throughout the years, which included her two daughters at the time of its closure.

He wished Robinson the best in her well-earned retirement.

Despite Hair Café not being a member of Malden’s Chamber of Commerce, the nonprofit recognized the legacy the salon crafted during its existence.

“50 years is a long time and they will be missed,” the Chamber’s Executive Director Marianne Cohen told Patch.
