New Principal Named For Malden High School
The Superintendent announced the hire earlier this month.
MALDEN, MA — Superintendent of Schools Timothy Sippel announced that he has appointed the next principal of Malden High School.
Michael Sabin will assume the role on July 1. He is succeeding Christopher Mastrangelo, who has held the position since 2017. Sippel announced the decision not to extend Mastrangelo’s contract for one additional year this past November, despite the principal’s plans to retire in the summer of 2027.
Sabin has more than 25 years of experience in the field of public education. He graduated from Harvard University in 1990 and later went back to earn a Master’s degree from his alma mater in school administration. He has teaching and administrative experience in the communities of Boston, Somerville, Cambridge, Lawrence, Waltham, and Charlestown. His specific leadership roles include being the principal of the John W. McDevitt Middle School in Waltham for seven years, Principal of the Healey K-8 School in Somerville for three years, Principal of the John W. McCormack Middle School for five years, and Principal of Edwards Middle School in Charlestown for five years.

Sabin is currently the Executive Director of School Transformation for Boston Public Schools, which he has held since 2022.
He (Sabin) collaborates with principals and school leadership teams to raise achievement, including in some of Boston’s most complex high schools, and schools have made significant academic growth and exited state intervention with his support,” Sippel said. “The expertise he brings from many years as an urban school leader will be an asset as we continue our work to do right by all kids.”

According to Sippel, Sabin separated himself from a large pool of candidates after two rounds of interviews.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the team at Malden High School,” Sabin said in a statement.“I look forward to working with all of the teachers, students and families to build on the school’s great traditions and meet the needs of all community members."
