CONCORD, NH — Between June 4, and June 6, state troopers held more commercial vehicle safety checks inspecting motor vehicles in New Hampshire. These checks were performed as part of a multi-state effort inspecting vehicles from the United States as well as Canada and Mexico, according to Lt. Andrew Player of Troop G. More than 500 vehicles were checked.

Of those vehicles, more than 1,200 violations were issued. Two hundred and five were so severe that they required the vehicle or driver to be placed out of service.

"In total, 106 vehicles were placed out of service for critical safety violations while 30 drivers were placed out of service for violations including possessing drugs, operating after suspension, violating restrictions of driving hours, and not holding the proper class of driver’s license," Player stated. "Troopers issued 84 citations and made one arrest as a result of commercial motor vehicle inspections."

Troop F troopers were called to Pinkham Notch around 2 p.m. on Thursday for a report of a motorcycle accident with potentially serious injuries.

The crash was reported just north of the town line with Jackson.

Police from that community were at the scene first and found the driver, Norman Groleau, 71, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, had crashed down a steep embankment on the south side of the road.

It was difficult for emergency personnel – including Gorham and Jackson firefighters and EMTs – to access the crash scene. New Hampshire Department of Transportation also arrived to assist.

After about 45 minutes, first responders were able to get to Groleau. He was transported to Memorial Hospital in Conway and then, med-flighted to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

On June 7, state police were notified that Groleau had passed away due to the injuries in the crash.

The cause of the crash is unknown. Anyone with information is asked to contact Troop F at 603-846-3333 or troopf@dos.nh.gov.
