Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing $230K from Ruth's Chris

Florida man stole money from Garden City restaurant where he worked as an office manager and income auditor, the DA said.

A former office manager and auditor for a Garden City restaurant admitted to stealing more than $230,000 from his employer, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Barry Pearlstein, 70, of Florida, pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records. Judge Philip Grella committed sentencing Pearlstein to two consecutive sentences totaling 18 months in jail, the DA said. Pearlstein will also have to make a full restitution of $230,933.39

Between January 2009 and June 2014, Pearlstein stole cash from Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse by under-reporting sales and reducing cash deposits, officials said. By taking cash meant for deposits on a total of 511 different dates, Pearlstein pocketed more than $230,000, according to the DA’s office.

Pearlstein was fired in June after more than 11 years of employment and moved to Florida, the DA said.

“Integrity is not a virtue of a bygone age; it remains the guiding principle of all hard-working people, business owners and employees alike,” Acting DA Madeline Singas said. “This defendant abused the trust of his employer and broke the law by taking advantage of his position to steal thousands of dollars from his employer and then lying to conceal his crime. My office will continue its efforts to make sure that this defendant is held accountable for his actions.”
