Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the varsity boys basketball team, coaches and alumni, the boys booster club, and family and friends of the boys basketball program, the Fourth Annual Alumni Basketball Game held in Massapequa High School’s gymnasium raised $2,500 for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

The game, designated as a “Coaches, Alumni and Community vs. Cancer Awareness” event by Massapequa’s head varsity coach Martin Voigt, was held to support the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign spearheaded by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The money was donated to pancreatic cancer research in honor of the Voigt and Cosenza families who have experienced tragic losses as a result of the disease. While this is the fifth year the event has taken place, this is the fourth year funds were generated and donated to fight cancer. During those four years, more than $7,000 has been raised.

Adding to the excitement of the event were raffle baskets with items from local merchants as well as clothing from Under Armour, signed jerseys from the New York Jets and Knicks, and Villanova and Fordham University basketball apparel.

“A special thank you to Mrs. Voigt, Mrs. Perna, Mrs. Nealis and all the parent volunteers and their teams for organizing the tremendously gracious items and baskets,” Voigt said. “Thanks, also, to our ‘voice’ Coach Rath and our guest referee Mr. Thomas Amendola and Mr. Bryce Paladino, and everyone who graciously donated to this two-hour event to help fight cancer. Congratulations go out to all our alumni, varsity players, family members and booster club participants for pulling together a spectacular event.”
