• Kegs Will Fly at the 10th Annual OBX Brewtag (outerbanksvoice.com) — Nags Head residents can look forward to the 10th Annual OBX Brewtag on October 24 at the Soundside Event Site, with free admission from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Families will find keg-flying contests, kids' activities, and plenty of local and regional food and beer, with proceeds supporting the Rogallo Foundation.
   

• In an $80 motel room, a discovery to shed light on the origins of life (seattletimes.com) — In a budget motel room in Nags Head, a small team of scientists quietly turned a vacation-town stay into a makeshift lab and discovered two new species of a rare microbe. Their work, sparked partly by federal science funding turmoil, could help biologists better understand how photosynthetic life evolved on Earth and potentially elsewhere.
