MOUNT VERNON, VA — A groundbreaking was held Friday to mark construction of the new Woodlawn Fire and Rescue Station 24 on Lukens Lane in Mount Vernon. The site of the future station is adjacent to the existing fire station, which continues to operate.

The 15,000-square-foot station will replace the existing building to account for future growth. It will operate as a 24/7 facility for up to 16 fire and rescue personal and have four single drive-through apparatus bays for emergency vehicles. The two-level building will also be LEED Silver certified.

Construction kicked off in December 2019, and personnel could begin occupying the new station as early as summer 2021. Full completion of the project is slated for spring 2022.

"This new, improved fire and rescue station is designed to improve emergency response services in the Woodlawn community as it grows, and we embark on the 21st century redevelopment of Richmond Highway," said Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck in a statement.

The existing fire station dates back to 1970 and was the first owned and operated by Fairfax County. Other fire stations built before that time in Fairfax County had been volunteer fire stations. The old station will be demolished after the new building is completed.
