Mount Vernon House Fire Displaces 4 Residents

No one was injured in a fire that started with cooking oil on a stove.

MOUNT VERNON, VA—Two adults and two kids were displaced from a fire at their Mount Vernon home last Friday, July 27, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

Around 4:06 p.m., firefighters arrived to the 8400 block of Leaf Drive with smoke showing from the front of a one-story home. Crews quickly located and extinguished a fire in the kitchen. No one was injured.

One resident was using the stove to heat cooking oil when the fire started. The resident attempted to extinguish the fire before exiting the home. Smoke alarms activated after the resident evacuated. No one else was home.

Fire investigators determined combustion of cooking oil on the stove was the cause of the fire. Damages are initially estimated to be $93,750. The residents declined Red Cross assistance.
