Passenger, 40, Dies in Single-Car Crash on Richmond Highway: Police
Driver, in stable condition, hit a fire hydrant and a phone pole Saturday morning after his car drifted off the roadway, police said.
Fairfax County Police say a 40-year-old man from the Alexandria area lost his life Saturday morning in a one-car crash along Richmond Highway.
Daniel Duarte Vasquez died as a result of his injuries in the single-vehicle crash on Richmond Highway near Fairhaven Avenue, according to police. He was a passenger in the car and police say he was not wearing a seatbelt.
Vasquez was a passenger in a 1995 BMW when the crash occurred at around 7:15 a.m., police said. Police say Crash Reconstruction detectives believe that the vehicle was traveling south on Richmond Highway when it drifted off the right side of the roadway, up onto a curb, striking a fire hydrant, and a phone pole.

The driver, a 23-year-old Oxon Hill, Md. man, was seriously injured and transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, FCPD said. The driver is now in stable condition there. The driver was wearing his seatbelt, police said.
Detectives do not believe speed was a factor but are investigating whether alcohol may be involved. Charges are pending against the driver, according to police.
