Pit Bull Fatally Shot By Police; Wanted Owner Arrested

Police shot a pit bull charging at them as the dog owner attempting to evade arrest in Groveton.

GROVETON, VA—An attempt to arrest a wanted man escalated into police shooting his pit bull in Groveton Tuesday.

Around 8:20 p.m., police spotted a man wanted for armed robbery in DC. He was walking with another person and a pit bull at South Kings Highway and Brick Hearth Court.

A chase ensued, and the pit bull charged at the officers, initial investigations show. One of the officers fired a weapon, and one shot hit the dog and killed it.

Shelton Coates, 26, of Alexandria, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The Metropolitan Police Department has also responded with its own charges.
