Saturday Night Fire Damages Mount Vernon Home
Occupants escape blaze, but cause is under investigation, says Fairfax County fire department.

A fire on Saturday night heavily damaged a Mount Vernon home, but the six occupants escaped unharmed, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
Firefighters responded at about 11:45 p.m. to the blaze at the single-family house at 8634 Woodward Ave., the fire department said. They encountered smoke coming from the two-story, split-foyer structure upon arrival, and brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes.

The damage to the house is estimated at $266,000. Six men were home at the time of the fire, and all escaped when they smelled smoke, the fire department said. There were no working smoke alarms in the home.
After the crew put out the fire, one firefighter was taken for medical evaluation after returning to the fire station.

The fire began in the house’s basement and is under investigation, the fire department said. The Red Cross is assisting the occupants, who were displaced.
