Smoking Materials Ignite Springfield House Fire

Four residents are displaced after improper disposal of smoking materials started a fire on the house's wooden deck.

GREATER ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Fairfax County firefighters responded to an early Sunday morning fire started by improperly disposed smoking materials at the 7300 block of Lamar Drive in Springfield.

A passerby had alerted the home's four residents about the fire, and they escaped with no injuries before rescue units arrived. The four residents were displaced and declined Red Cross services.

Investigators determined the fire started at house's wooden deck accidentally from discarded smoking materials. Damages are estimated at $15,000. The home did not have smoke alarms, and firefighters installed two in the home.
