The fallen pole created a hazard because electrified power lines fell across the road, WTOP said. The closure is expected to cause problems for commuters driving home Wednesday evening.

At 9:30 a.m., the police said on Twitter that Edsall Road was closed down in both directions for eight hours, and traffic was being detoured.
