Unattended Cooking Causes Mount Vernon Apartment Fire
Mount Vernon residents from two apartments are displaced after unattended cooking caused a fire.
ALEXANDRIA, VA -- A kitchen fire caused by unattended cooking has displaced Mount Vernon residents in two apartment units.
At approximately 9:27 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16, Fairfax County firefighters responded to a reported apartment fire at the 8200 block of Russell Road. Firefighters found smoke coming from the second story, and they quickly responded to stop the fire from spreading any further.

Only one resident was home and escaped after hearing the smoke alarm. No injuries were reported.
Fire Investigators determined that the fire originated from an unattended pot of oil heating on the stove. Red Cross services were offered but declined. Damages are estimated at approximately $46,875.
