Would-Be Burglar Breaks His Leg While Trying To Escape: Police

After the suspect recovers from his injury, he'll be taken to jail, say Fairfax County police.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A man who broke into an apartment Wednesday night came away with a broken leg and a ticket to the county jail, according to the Fairfax County police.

Leoul Yosef, 21, is facing a burglary charge; the police say he entered an apartment in the 6000 block of Archstone Court, just south of the Beltway (Interstate 495) near Van Dorn Street.

The police were called to the scene at 9:01 p.m. Wednesday. A 29-year-old woman was moving into the apartment and had to leave for a brief time. "When she came back, she saw a man climbing over her second-floor balcony," the police said in a statement.

The man jumped off the balcony and injured his leg when he landed on the ground. "He crawled away, leaving tracks in the snow," the police said.

Officers were following his tracks when they heard a medical call for a man who had fallen on the ice and broken his leg. They responded to that location and identified Yosef as the man who had leaped from the victim’s balcony.

He was wearing clothing that matched the burglar's description: all black with a hood and carrying a backpack, the police said.

The officers took Yosef to a local hospital for treatment of a broken leg. When he's released, the police said they will take him to the Adult Detention Center in Fairfax City, where Yosef will be served with an arrest warrant charging him with burglary.
