📰 News we're reading

1. Research Project Manager (odu.edu) — Old Dominion University in Norfolk is hiring a full-time Research Project Manager to coordinate complex translational science projects across its research enterprise. Local applicants with strong communication, organization, and grant familiarity are encouraged to apply, with applications open now and review beginning October 23. The role supports faculty and teams but leaves scientific and financial decisions to principal investigators.

2. Calling Norfolk police for something that's not an emergency? An AI may answer the phone. (wvtf.org) — Norfolk's 911 center has rolled out an AI system to handle many non-emergency calls, freeing human operators to focus on true emergencies. Residents can still reach a person on request, but routine questions about reports, storms, shelters, or code issues are now often answered automatically, reducing hold times and easing pressure on a historically short-staffed division.

3. Norfolk Recognized for 'Best Tasting Water' at Statewide Competition (norfolk.gov) — Norfolk's tap water was just named the best-tasting in Virginia, with the city's utilities team winning a statewide competition for the third time since 2021. The award highlights the work of about 300 Utilities employees who manage treatment, testing, and infrastructure that delivers safe drinking water across Norfolk and much of the south side of Hampton Roads.

4. Crews put 'asbestos' tape on unit door at Pembroke Towers (wavy.com) — Norfolk resident Christine Bonavita has been barred from her Pembroke Towers apartment after contractors began asbestos abatement, leaving her distressed about damage, safety, and lack of access. The city has cited the building for leaks, pests, and other issues, while property managers and contractors insist remediation met standards; Bonavita is pursuing legal action and says she's staying to fight for safer conditions for all tenants.

5. Broadneck Grad Is Second in Command of USS Nimitz (southernmarylandchronicle.com) — A Broadneck High School graduate now serves as executive officer of the USS Nimitz, which recently shifted its homeport to Norfolk. The veteran carrier will train new naval aviators here for a few more years before its planned retirement, tying Norfolk more closely to the Navy's oldest flattop and the careers of sailors like Capt. Robert Anderson.
