Catholic School In Medford Closing At Conclusion Of School Year
The school has been a city staple since 1929.
MEDFORD, MA — A private Catholic school announced it is closing after nearly a century in operation.
Saint Joseph School will permanently close its doors at the conclusion of the current school year. According to Father Timothy Hynes of the Pastor of the Mary Queen of Peace Parish that oversees the school, the decision was made due to consistently declining enrollment throughout the past five years, while costs have simultaneously increased. Hynes said the school currently has only 169 students across its preschool through eighth grade classes.
“With support from the Catholic Schools Office for the Archdiocese of Boston, we are working with area parish schools to welcome families, faculty, and staff for the 2026/2027 school year,” Hynes said. “Our goal is to provide you options to continue Catholic education for your children and to work towards as smooth a transition as is possible for our students. In addition, tuition assistance offered by the Catholic Schools Foundation will follow families who enroll their children in other CSO sponsored or supported schools.”

Hynes added that he and his peers are working with other local Catholic schools to allow Saint Joseph’s teachers and staff to receive interview priority with them.
Saint Joseph’s was founded in 1929 by Pastor Daniel Hogan. It began solely as an elementary school taught by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston, as many catholic schools were once staffed by nuns. It later added kindergarten and middle school offerings. In 1999, it made its final major addition with the establishment of a preschool program.

Final Class: Private School In Framingham To Shut Down After Decades
“I never expected Saint Joe’s would be closing, but there has been an unfortunate trend of private schools going under,” Saint Joseph’s Class of 2013 member Chris Cafferty told Patch.
Cafferty first enrolled at the school in seventh grade. He also lamented having to leave Immaculate Conception School in Malden when it permanently closed in 2006.
“Despite this news, as people of faith, we put our trust in God to show us the way. We will honor the long ministry of Saint Joseph School,” Hynes said. “We are so proud of the generations of students, teachers and staff who have contributed to building a community committed to academic excellence and being great examples of people of faith.”
Saint Joseph’s is located at 132 High St.
