Small Owl Found Injured In Medford: Report
The creature is now recovering at a wildlife facility.
MEDFORD, MA — A rare small owl is being nursed back to health after being found in the city last week, according to a report from WBZ News Radio 1030.
The saw-whet owl is the smallest type of the species known to the east coast. The seven-inch, 176 gram creature was discovered injured in a parking lot, unable to fly. It was quickly transported to the Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford where it received emergency initial treatment. It was determined that the owl had two broken bones in its wing.
The miniature animal is now recovering at Cape Ann Wildlife, located at the peninsula approximately 30 miles north of Boston.

Saw-whet owls tend to not grow to more than eight inches tall with a maximum wingspan of 19 inches. According to the National Audubon Society, the owl got its name due to its vocal call resembling the sound of a saw being sharpened on a whetstone.
