Medford High School Put In Temporary Lockdown After Receiving Threat
The threat was soon determined to be illegitimate by police.
MEDFORD, MA — The city’s high school located at 489 Winthrop St. was placed in lockdown or “Secure” mode on Friday morning in response to a threat the school received over the phone, according to Interim Superintendent of Schools Suzanne Galusi.
The phone call was received shortly after 8:30 a.m., and Medford police responded to the scene immediately to conduct a search for ballistics.

“We can confirm that these searches found no credible threats, and the police department determined that the building was safe,” Galusi said in a statement. “The building was released from the secure mode by lunch and the school resumed normal operations. To provide continued reassurance and support, a modest MPD presence remained on campus for the rest of the day.”
Galusi added that the response will be reviewed and evaluated in order to improve in the instance that a threat is made again. She also alluded to “misinformation” circulating about the event on social media.

“We recognize that events of this nature can be unsettling for our students, staff, and families. Please be assured that the safety and well-being of the MPS community is our top priority,” Galusi said. “Our actions are always centered on that commitment, and school counselors in all of our buildings are available to any students who may need support or a space to talk.”
Patch has reached out to the Medford Police Department for details of the threat made.
